We are proud to announce that MethaneMapper by EyeClimate has been named an awardee by the Mozilla Foundation for its work in open source artificial intelligence and environmental justice.

The Challenge of Underreported Emissions

Emissions accounting and regulation often fall short when oil and gas companies, coal plants, and factory farms ignore pipeline leaks. Relying on these facilities to self monitor their own fields frequently results in reporting the absolute minimum amount of carbon and methane possible, making current regulations mean very little.

The MethaneMapper Solution

To combat this lack of transparency, EyeClimate developed MethaneMapper, an open source and AI powered hyperspectral imaging tool designed to detect methane emissions and trace them directly back to their sources.

Unlike traditional monitoring methods that rely on handheld tools or individually installed devices that can be easily fooled, MethaneMapper uses a completely different approach. The input data comes from overhead airborne hyperspectral images of the target area.

This top down methodology makes MethaneMapper significantly more accurate than traditional monitoring, and it allows the tool to operate over a far wider geographic region. By removing the reliance on localized and easily manipulated sensors, EyeClimate is bringing true accountability to global emissions tracking.
